Avatcha

Asteroid 17445, Avatcha, was discovered 1989 December 28, 1989 by Eric W. Elst at Haute Provence. Avatcha has a period of 5 years, 232 days and is about 15 miles in diameter.

It was named for Avatcha Bay, on the southeastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Russia, which the explorer Vitus Bering used as a base for his expeditions to Alaska. A French astronomer he had with him died of scurvy and is buried near the bay.
