Asteroid 24587. Kapaneus, a Jupiter Trojan, was discovered on September 30, 1973 by C. J. van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld on photographic plates taken by Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory near Pauma Valley, California. It has a period of 11 years, 274 days.
It was named for Kapaneus (or Capaneus), one of the Seven Against Thebes. Kapaneus hated Eteocles, one of the brothers fighting for the throne of Thebes, so much that he wanted to destroy the entire city; as he was climbing the walls, he defied Zeus to stop him and the god responded by immediately striking him dead with a thunderbolt. Kapaneus was the father of Sthenelos, who distinguished himself in the Trojan War.
Astrologically, asteroid Kapaneus seems to indicate chutzpah, resistance to torture, disproportionate hatred.
