Asteroid 546, Herodias, was discovered on October 10, 1904 by Paul Gotz at Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany. It has a period of 4 years, 69 days and is slightly less than 41 miles in diameter.
Herodias was named for a Bible character, the consort of the Judean satrap of the Romans Herod Antipas, whose relationship with her John the Baptist criticized; when her daughter Salome danced for Herod Antipas, he was pleased enough to tell her that he would grant any wish she had that he could grant. Herodias got her to tell him she wanted the head of John the Baptist on a platter, and it was done.
