
Asteroid 1812, Gilgamesh, was discovered on September 24, 1960 by CJ van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld at Palomar Mountain Observatory near San Diego as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey. It has a period of 5 years,77 days and is about 9 1/2 miles in diameter.
It was named for the hero of the ancient Akkadian saga "The Epic of Gilgamesh," a legendary king of Uruk, a city-state in what is now Iraq.
